On April 28, 2017, at approximately 15:20 hours, the Jasper County Sheriffs’ Department along with multiple other agencies, including Lake County Sheriff's Office, Indiana State Police, Porter County Sheriff's Office, Kouts Police Department, DeMotte Police Department, Newton County Sheriff's Office, Dyer Police Department and several others were notified by Hero 911 from a device inside the Wheatfield Elementary School of a shooting.

Wheatfield Elementary School officials working during an extremely busy time of day, as students were being picked up and buses were on scene, locked the school down per protocol. Wheatfield School officials did an outstanding job in handling this intense situation.

Officers cleared the school for safety finding no issues of violence. Officers also were sent to other locations in the Kankakee Valley School corporation, all found to be safe and secure.

Sheriff Terry Risner and Marshal Dave Schaetzel would like to thank all the responding agencies for their immediate response and diligence during this extremely stressful situation.

At this time, it appears it was some type of false activation of the Hero 911 system and is being investigated by local IT departments and the company that provides the service.

Terry J. Risner, Sheriff Jasper County
David Schaetzel, Wheatfield Town Marshal
