On Thursday, August 25, 2016 at approximately 9:25 P.M. Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an attempted robbery at the TA Truck Stop on State Road 10 near the I-65 interchange.  According to the victim, a white male wearing all black had handed the cashier a robbery note demanding all cash be handed over.  As this was unsuccessful, the male left the truck stop and was last seen walking towards the north away from the business.

Law enforcement units from Jasper County Sheriff, Indiana State Police, and Newton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and discovered additional information on the suspect and had also been observed walking east on State Road 10.  A search of the area met with negative results; however, video surveillance did provide a suspect who is known to local law enforcement from previous contacts. Suspect did not receive any cash from the victim nor was a weapon displayed.

At approximately 10:00 P.M. the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office was advised of an armed robbery which had just occurred at the T-Mart on State Road 10 in the School Crossing Shopping area.  The descriptors matched the suspect from the attempted robbery earlier at the TA Truck Stop. The victim also indicated the suspect had brandished a black hand gun during the robbery.  Suspect was observed leaving the area westbound from the business on a bicycle, with an undetermined amount of United States currency.

Law enforcement units from Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, and Demotte Police all responded to the area.  Surveillance video confirmed this to have been the same suspect from the earlier robbery attempt.  Sheriffs’ Deputies and assisting Officers started a search of known locations where the suspect had previously been located.

After several residences had been contacted with negative results, Sheriffs’ Deputies located a bicycle that matched the description used by the suspect parked at the Heritage Park Apartments on State Road 10.  At 2:31 A.M. on Friday, the 26th of August the suspect was located in an apartment at the Heritage Park Apartments and taken into custody by numerous law enforcement officers.

Suspect was identified as Andrew J. Trumpus, age 26 of Wheatfield, Indiana.  Located with the suspect a black hand gun which in fact was found to be a blank starter pistol, and United States currency consistent with the amount taken from the robbery.  Trumpus was also wanted by Porter County on a misdemeanor warrant.

Trumpus was transported to the Jasper County Law Enforcement Detention Center where he was being held on the following charges without bond;

     Armed Robbery, Level 3 Felony

     Possession of a Narcotic Drug, Level 6 Felony

     Attempted Robbery, Level 5 Felony

     Possession of a Hypodermic Needle, Level 6 Felony

     Possession of Paraphernalia, Class A Misdemeanor

Hold for Porter County Sheriff’s Office.

“Sheriff Risner wishes to commend the Jasper County Sheriffs’ Deputies and assisting agencies for the rapid response and the determination to bring a suspect into custody that was placing our local businesses and citizens in jeopardy.”
