On Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 2:20 P.M. the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting an armed home invasion and robbery had just occurred in the Tanglewood Subdivision area approximately two miles south of Demotte, Indiana.  According to the complainant, the victim had ran to his location and asked for help as the residence had just been robbed.

The victim was able to provide a physical description and vehicle description of the suspects.  This information provided was that four subjects had entered the victim’s residence armed with handguns and with their faces covered by bandanas or with hoods pulled over their heads.  The victim indicated that the suspects had applied some type of chemical spray to the victim’s Rottweiler driving the dog away and had pried open the home safe.  During the robbery the victim was held at gunpoint by two of the suspects while items were stolen from the residence.

The suspects upon exiting the residence were observed by neighbors in the area who advised Law Enforcement that they had observed at least four people with long guns slung over their shoulders running from the victim’s house.  Both the victim and witnesses were able to provide a vehicle description which indicated a Chevrolet Equinox, maroon in color, occupied by five subjects as apparently a white female was driving and stayed in the vehicle during the robbery.

911 Communications Officers gave an area broadcast of the suspects and the vehicle that were considered heavily armed.  An off duty Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy who was traveling in the area of State Road 10 and 1100 West observed the suspect’s vehicle entering I-65 northbound.  The off duty unit followed the suspect’s vehicle providing location while responding back up units proceeded to intercept on I-65 northbound from the Jasper County line.  At the Crown Point exit a number of Law Enforcement units had converged allowing a traffic stop to be conducted on the suspect vehicle.

The five suspects were removed from the vehicle without serious incident and were found to be in possession of several long guns lying in plain view of the vehicle along with physical and clothing descriptions given by witnesses and the victim.

After insuring that the suspects were safely secured they were transported to the Jasper County Law Enforcement and Detention Center.  The 2005 Chevy Equinox was towed and impounded pending search warrant for the interior of the vehicle.  Of the five suspects, one was found to be a seventeen year female juvenile from Joliet, Illinois and another suspect was identified as a sixteen year old male juvenile from English Park, Illinois.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Detectives conducted interviews with the three adult suspects and learned from the interviews that the seventeen year old female juvenile had at one time lived in the victim’s residence as a step daughter and was aware of the safe containing cash and firearms.  It was also learned during the interview that at least one of the suspects wanted to engage Law Enforcement Officers with gun fire upon seeing the off duty Sheriff’s Deputy, however at least one adult suspect talked the subject out of opening fire.

The adult suspects are identified as:

Devon D. Gaskin, male, age 19 of Joliet, Illinois

Joshua D. Vasquez, male, age 21 of Joliet, Illinois

Teresa C. Heider, female, age 18 of Joliet, Illinois

Also incarcerated were the sixteen year old male from English Park, Illinois and the seventeen year old female from Joliet, Illinois.  At this time due to the Level 2 Felony, Burglary While Armed with a Deadly Weapon, the juvenile offenders are being processed as adults.

All subjects are currently charged with Armed Robbery with a Deadly Weapon, Level 3 Felony

Burglary to a Dwelling while Armed with a Deadly Weapon, Level 2 Felony.  Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.

Assisting on the traffic stop were units from Crown Point Police Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana Conservation Officers, and Hobart Police Department.

Sheriff Risner would like to commend the victim and neighbors for providing an extremely detailed description under a high degree of duress and the professional and quick response by Sheriffs’ personnel and supporting agencies.  “Our communications officers and deputies responded in the highest traditions of law enforcement to bring a group of armed and dangerous individuals in custody and keep our citizens as safe as we possibly can.”

ALL SUSPECTS ARE CONSIDERED INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY IN A COURT OF LAW.
